How to keep a divorce from affecting professional life

On Behalf of Law Office of Timothy S. Keough, P.A. | Nov 18, 2022 | Divorce

Without a doubt, a marital breakup is one of the most difficult and emotional things an individual can go through. It is rare for a person to go through a divorce without letting the experience affect nearly every aspect of that person’s life. A significant personal life event like a divorce can negatively impact professional life as well. Here are some ways Florida residents can get through a divorce without their professional life falling apart.

Give a heads-up

It is common to want to keep personal life and professional life separate. However, when going through a divorce, managers or superiors at work should know about it. Before initiating the conversation, take some time to think about what to say and how to say it.

Don’t use work as an escape

Work can be a needed distraction from the worry and stress that often come with divorce. It can be helpful to use work as a way to unplug from personal struggles. But, do not use work as a way to block out difficult emotions. Find healthy ways to address negative emotions.

Find a support system

It’s ok and fun to hang out with coworkers outside of work. It is fine to vent to them occasionally but keep the sharing of intimate details with colleagues to a minimum. It is more beneficial to have a support system of very close friends and family to share intimate details with.

A positive environment

Having a positive work environment can also be very helpful. Keep pictures of children, post inspirational quotes or post sticky notes with encouraging words. It is hard to keep a divorce from affecting work performance, but maintaining an optimistic outlook about life after a divorce can have a huge impact. Any person in Florida who is going through a divorce and needs help could get answers by consulting with an experienced family law attorney.
