How to deal with feelings of guilt amid divorce

On Behalf of Law Office of Timothy S. Keough, P.A. | Mar 8, 2023 | Divorce

Ending a marriage is often an experience filled with mixed emotions. For some Florida residents, divorce is freeing and an opportunity for a fresh start. For others, divorce is a psychologically challenging event filled with many complex and confusing emotions. Guilt is among the most common of these emotions. Here are some helpful ways to overcome the feelings of guilt that often accompany divorce.

Self-forgiveness

Whether or not a person thinks they did wrong in the marriage or divorce, they cannot begin the healing process until they forgive themselves. Obviously, this is easier said than done. Most people can forgive others easily but find it more difficult to practice self-forgiveness. However, realize that the past cannot be changed and try to learn from it instead.

Write it down

Some people find it very helpful to put their feelings and thoughts down in writing. Practicing a writing exercise can help facilitate healing and clear subconscious thoughts. Many times, these subconscious thoughts provide answers that will help the person to move forward.

Professional help

Nearly half of all marriages in America end in divorce, so realize that there is no shame in going to therapy to work through divorce-related challenges. A professional therapist can help to point out what’s normal and rational and suggest exercises to help clients get through a divorce. However, the legal aspects of divorce can be some of the most confusing parts of this experience. Those in Florida who have questions or are going through a divorce may want to consider contacting a legal professional. An experienced family law attorney can answer questions and provide much-needed legal guidance.
