Helpful things to do before filing for divorce

On Behalf of Law Office of Timothy S. Keough, P.A. | Feb 10, 2023 | Divorce

Anyone who has ended a marriage will likely say that the experience was challenging and overwhelming at times. A divorce is very emotional, and having to make life-altering decisions in the midst of these difficult emotions is not easy. For those in Florida who may be headed for a divorce and are unsure of where to begin, what follows may be helpful.

Get organized financially

A big part of the divorce process is equally dividing and distributing marital debts and assets. Before filing for divorce, make a list of what is owned and what is owed. When an individual is aware of his or her finances before going into divorce proceedings, he or she is more likely to get a fair share when negotiating the divorce settlement.

Establish credit

In many marriages, spouses share accounts and credit. When divorce happens, sharing credit with a spouse can make it difficult to make large purchases like a car or a home. Work to establish individual credit as soon as divorce becomes imminent. One way to do this is to apply for an individual credit card account.

Hire professional help

If both spouses are willing to cooperate, it is usually easier and less expensive to settle the divorce without going to court. However, if this is not possible, hiring an attorney who is capable and willing to litigate the case before a judge can prove invaluable. Before filing for divorce in Florida, it can be beneficial to consult with an experienced legal professional who not only knows the value of settling quickly but can also provide guidance and legal protection.
