How to cope and deal with divorce anxiety

On Behalf of Law Office of Timothy S. Keough, P.A. | Nov 8, 2023 | Divorce

The dissolution of a marriage is often one of the most difficult events any Florida resident can face. The process of separating from a long-term spouse is not something that a person can fully prepare for. Anxiety, depression and other mental health struggles are common for those who go through divorce. Here are a few ways to cope and deal with the anxiety that often comes with divorce.

Acceptance

Difficult emotions are normal when going through a divorce. Yet, repressing or avoiding difficult emotions just delays the healing process. It is important to take time to feel and then accept these emotions. Exercising, meditation and journaling are healthy ways to cope with difficult emotions.

Support

No one should attempt to go through a divorce alone. Joining a divorce support group can prove invaluable. Humans are social creatures, and having people around who are going through a similar experience can help one feel understood and accepted.

Look to the future

During a divorce, it’s only natural to reflect on the past and try to figure out where things went wrong. Reflection can be somewhat helpful, just try not to dwell on the past. The marriage is over so leave it in the past where it belongs. Try to focus on the future and be optimistic about all the possibilities that await.

Professional help

Do not be afraid to seek professional help, such as a counselor or therapist. These mental health professionals can help any person get through difficult times. For those in Florida who have questions or are going through a divorce, it is recommended to consult with an experienced legal professional. A knowledgeable family law attorney can provide much-needed guidance and help a person make the best decisions for his or her future.
