How to get through post-divorce depression

On Behalf of | Dec 31, 2022 | Divorce |

Whether a marital breakup is a complete surprise or a mutual decision, any Florida resident who goes through this event can experience a range of emotions. A divorce is a form of loss, so the feelings a person experiences during it often mirror the emotions that occur when a loved one passes away. The depression that often accompanies divorce can not only diminish a person’s ability to function day-to-day, but ultimately cause a lot of physical and emotional problems. Here are a few ways to process and recover from post-divorce depression.

Take time to grieve

Take time to mourn following a divorce. As noted, divorce is not unlike death, so it is normal to grieve the end of a marriage. Taking time to grieve can allow a person to process the events that have unfolded, which will facilitate healing.

Mood swings are normal

It is common and completely normal to experience emotional mood swings amid divorce. In the beginning, depressive mood swings may be sharper and occur more frequently. Keep in mind that time helps with healing. However, if after several months these mood swings are still happening often, taking intentional and immediate action is recommended.

Eat healthy and exercise

Many people use food to console themselves when they are depressed. But eating the wrong food can make a person feel worse. Now more than ever, it is important to eat as healthily as possible to ensure the body and mind are functioning properly. Also, work to establish an exercise routine. Research has shown that exercise is one of the best and most healthy ways to combat depression.

Rest assured that going through negative emotions such as depression is common following a divorce. Just remember to be vigilant and stay aware of how long these feelings persist. Speaking with a legal professional can help ease the mind of any person in Florida who is going through a divorce. An experienced divorce attorney can provide legal guidance and protect personal rights.
